"Children of the Aganes" Comic Project
“Children of the Aganes” is a story about two trans witch boys, Indri and Loris, inspired by the legends and folklore of Friuli, the most northeastern part of Italy, bordering Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia, with a language all its own.
Indri, a tailor’s son working in his father’s shop, is terrified of his own magic and embracing who he is. One night he dreams of a boy named Loris, who is the exact opposite of himself: a boy confident in his identity and sees his magic as a gift. Brought together by a mysterious connection, Indri and Loris embark on an adventure to search for Loris’s missing mother, and Indri uncovers the mystery regarding his own mother’s disappearance right after he was born. The story covers topics of overcoming internalized transphobia, finding self acceptance, and discovering trans joy, these being the main themes.
The "Agane"
In Friulian folklore, the “agane” are mythical water sprites that appear as beautiful women dressed in white, who are said to live in wells and watery caves. Tales talk of them washing laundry along the banks of rivers and streams at night, along with their magical ability to transform into salamanders and snakes. In some stories, they are dangerous and demonic in nature, while in others they are loving and compassionate. The most notable story is of one agane who appeared as a salamander and gave a mother a magical ball of wool that could never run out. With this ball of wool, the mother was able to sew clothes for her children to survive the winter. From then onward, the ball of wool was passed down through the family, keeping them warm for generations to come.

Indri, submerged in water beneath lilypads (inspired by Ophelia from Hamlet), symbolizing his water magic and ties to the agane. The blue butterflies represent his powers over dream and sleep.

Loris and Indri under the moonlight by a river in a forest. The scenery of the Val d'Arzino, a valley in Friuli full of rivers, caves, and waterfalls, was used as reference.

Loris and Indri approach the entrance of a watery cave haunted by spirits. This artwork is inspired by the Villanova Caves in Lusevera, said to be a dangerous place filled with treasure, bandits, witches, and unburied dead.
